Johns reading

Summary
In the article "Discourse communities and Communities of Practice: Membership, conflict, and diversity" Ann Johns expands on the ideas already mentioned by Swales and Gee. However, johns explains the various problems that arise from discourse communities.
QD
1. Some of the complications Johns outlines that are relates to joining a discourse community are political aspects. It almost mimics social stratification and how people may view others or themselves.
2. The point in which Johns is trying to make is that when joining new the person may not agree with all the guidelines the discourse community has. To me this is very common and expected. This seen a lot in discourse communities such as science, theology, and sports.
3. Yes, because even though I'm involved with a group with a common goal, I believe things differently. I find this to be especially true in my religion. I believe in the same principles, but not exactly as everyone else.
4. I do agre with what Johns says because to be involved in a discourse community you have to agree with the main goal and to diligently with others to obtain that goal.
5. I had great authority over my writing, I follow the guidelines but also create pieces that have individuality .
6.  As students our work is still being judged by teachers and evaluated with grades that are to precious to risk.
MM
Understanding Johns writing has helped me understand the discourse communities I currently belong to and has given me the advice to make my experiences with the community a lot stronger.

  2. I also thought that the main reason this article was helpful was because Johns helped show discourse communities in a new way and making this concept more understandable.
